It was passable fare, thanks to Mattie's bread. "You don't have to eat those," she said, pointing to the eggs on his plate. "I've eaten worse," he replied in his usual honest manner and proceeded to eat them with bread. When the grounds had settled somewhat, Katie poured each of them a full mug of the delicious-smelling coffee. And it was delicious, from the top of the mug to the bottom. They each savored the taste while they enjoyed their quiet surroundings. "I've never heard so much silence," she said softly, straining her neck to see the top of the tall pines.

When Spence returned to the wagon he found the picnic lunch spread out on the seat of the wagon with her standing alongside, biting into a piece of chicken. He helped himself and was pleased to find that she was a great cook. She handed him a jar of water, which he accepted gratefully, and drank deeply. Wiping his hand across his mouth when he'd finished, he said, "When we get to St. Louis we'll have to get a pack mule to carry more supplies. " She nodded agreeably and sunk her teeth into a chunk of bread.
